Hampshire Hawks v Kent Spitfires Twenty20 Cup 14th June

HAMPSHIRE HAWKS BEAT KENT SPITFIRES BY 44 RUNS

Kris Temple reports from The Rose Bowl

Hampshire Hawks are on the crest of a Twenty20 wave, after comfortably seeing off the defending champions Kent Spitfires, in a front of an enthusiastic crowd at The Rose Bowl.

Arriving full of confidence after Friday's last-ball win over Sussex, Hampshire decided to bat first and got off to another flying start, with the new opening partnership of Michael Lumb and overseas signing Ian Harvey blasting 38 from the opening three overs.

Harvey fell for 22, but that brought the in-form Michael Carberry to join Lumb, and they added a stand of 50 in five overs, before Lumb was caught at long-off for 54 from just 34 balls, including three sixes. Carberry picked up the baton though, and hit a 39-ball fifty himself, before falling for 57 - his second half-century in 24 hours, after a match-winning knock at Hove on Friday night. The recalled Michael Brown ushered Hampshire through to an imposing total of 197 for 6 from their 20 overs. Brown ended unbeaten on 40, a career-best in the competition.

Having a 100 per cent record this season, Kent will have been confident of challenging the total, but lost skipper Rob Key for only 7, caught in the deep by Carberry.

England Lions batsman Joe Denly anchored the Spitfires' innings, notching his third successive half-century in this season's Twenty20 Cup, but a double-wicket burst from off-spinner Greg Lamb removed the dangerous Justin Kemp and Darren Stevens in the same over, Kemp to an outstanding diving catch from Academy teenager Hamza Riazuddin. That left Kent reeling at 67 for 4, a position from which they never recovered.

Academy pair Riazuddin and Liam Dawson then both picked up their maiden Twenty20 wickets, as Kent spluttered to 153 for 7 from their 20 overs, falling 44 runs short. All the Hampshire bowlers impressed, but Lamb's 2 for 25 was statistically the pick.

Man-of-the-match Michael Lumb told BBC Radio Solent: "We executed things absolutely brilliantly today. Myself and Harv (Ian Harvey) had our plans up front and stuck to them, and the bowlers were absolutely awesome as well. Sometimes it's your day and it comes off, but if you keep preparing well, then hopefully things go well on the field, and today they did."

Hampshire's next Twenty20 fixture is against Kent at Canterbury on Monday.
